Crawl Space Jacks in Charleston, SC

What are crawl space jack?

Crawl space support jacks are steel piers used to support floor joists that are collapsing. The support jacks keep the floor level by providing additional support. Many piers support the floor joists of a crawl space, which are typically made of concrete, wood, or a combination of the two.

How many jacks does it take to lift a house?

At least four jacks are needed to lift a square or rectangular house. Other shapes and sizes of houses may necessitate the use of additional jacks. Placing beams perpendicular to the floor joists beneath the house is a good idea. Underneath this, place a new set of beams.

Is it hard to jack up a house?

Lifting an entire house into the air is out of reach for almost all do-it-yourselfers. Simply put, there's far too much that can go horribly wrong. It's quite dangerous for your home and for everyone involved if you don't know what you're doing.

Can sloping floors be fixed?

After repairing any structural issues, foundation specialists will fix your sloping floor using one of several procedures. It may be necessary to jack up the floor joists and add supports, or it may be necessary to jack up the entire home and install new footers.

Are sloping floors in older homes normal?

Sloped floors are frequent in older homes, but they can also be found in homes that are only 15 to 30 years old. Normal and acceptable bending (bend) in the wood joists that make up the floor structure is the most common source of sloping floors. However, noticeable floor slopes may indicate a structural issue that has to be addressed.

Can a House floor collapse?

Multi-story buildings can, in fact, collapse through the floor. This usually happens when there is too much weight in the center and not enough support. If the ground beneath them gives way, the bottom floors can collapse.

Can sagging floors collapse?

The floor may completely collapse beneath you in the worst-case scenario. This usually happens if the floor has been sagging for a long time and you haven't done anything about it, but it's definitely a problem if you don't address the sagging home joists.

What causes floors to sag?

Floors that sag are more prevalent than you believe. Wood-eating insects, water-induced wood decay, undersized beams, and soil settlement are, in my opinion, the most typical reasons. I rectified the problem by building a new column in the basement, which was caused by an undersized beam in the basement.

What is crawl space encapsulation?

Building scientists propose crawl space encapsulation, or sealing, to transform a moist, dirty, moldy crawl space into a clean, dry environment where mold cannot grow. The field of crawl space encapsulation was invented by Basement Systems.

Why should you encapsulate a crawl space?

Mold, mildew, and other contaminants might enter your living space if your crawl space isn't encapsulated. Contaminated air can be damaging to your health as well as make your indoor space uncomfortable to reside in.

Frequently AskED Questions

Please read the answers to some of our most frequently asked questions concerning our services.

  • How deep is a crawl space foundation?

They usually reach a depth of two feet. Different foundation designs and insulation solutions are available to meet the needs of the home and the demands of the climate.

  • Does a bump out need a foundation?

Footers and a foundation wall are required for bump-out expansions that rest on the ground. Soil is scooped out using a small excavator or by hand.

  • What is a sagging floor?

The failure of floor joists in the crawl space beneath your home causes sagging flooring. Open crawl space vents or doors, high moisture and humidity, and damp, rotting wood can all cause these issues. A sagging floor is usually accompanied by a sagging floor joist.

  • What is acceptable floor sag?

Sagging is allowed in building rules for framed flooring, which sounds terrible. However, the maximum allowed span is only 1/360 of the whole span, which isn't much. That percentage would correspond to only one inch of sag if spread over a 45-foot-long joist, assuming joists could be made that long.
